Similar to a piece we did earlier on corn, this graphic shows the actual 2015 and forecasted 2016 trend soybean yields for the top 18 producing states and the U.S. along with the 2015 yield as a percent of trend and as a percent of the 2014 yield.

Note that we are using a 25 year trend.

The USDA did lower its final 2015 U.S. soybean yield to 48.0 bushels per acre (bpa) vs. the 48.3 bpa figure in the November report, though this is still a record high topping the prior high water mark of 47.5 set the prior year.

It is interesting to note that even with a higher record yield in 2015 as opposed to 2014 two years ago, nine of the top 18 producing states had record high yields vs. just five in 2015.

The highest yield last year was seen in NE at 58.0 bpa with IL and IA also posting outstanding yields.

The highest yields as a percent of the 25 year trend was 116% shared by four states including MI, MN, TN and WI with MN showing the greatest improvement vs. the prior year with their 2015 yield of 50.0 bpa 20.5% above their 2014 yield.

The lowest yield was in NC at 32.0 bpa, though LA was the worst performer in terms that their 41.0 bpa 2015 yield was just 89.0% of their 25 year trend and only 72.5% of their 2014 record yield of 56.5 bpa.
