To the Editor:

I am a numbers person. When I look at statistics and where I'm putting time and effort, I want to see a growing return on my investment. Because of my involvement and checkoff investment with the Nebraska Corn Board (NCB), I get to see first-hand my checkoff investment at work. As Nebraskans grow more corn on less land and inputs, I see great opportunity. That is why NCB focuses one of its four pillars on research and stewardship; to continue to create possibility and growth for not only me but all corn farmers in Nebraska and the next generation to come.

Research grows the possibility for what's next to come, and the 17 research-funded programs by NCB all have the same goal in mind, to increase the value and sustainability of Nebraska corn. Like the mission statement for the organization, it guides decisions and gets the greatest return on investment (ROI) for farmers.

Over the past five years, because of our checkoff investment in research, NCB has the following statistics:

-- Helped create over 150 jobs

-- Supported over 30 graduate students

-- Increased the value of corn and value-added products by over $4.2 billion

-- Impacted at least 1.8 million acres with sustainability efforts

-- Reached over 1,300 farmers or agriculture professionals

-- Connected with over 6,100 youth

Those numbers are impressive and showcase multiple programs. The programs invested in, including the UNL On-Farm Research, The Combine, and Project SENSE have grown the ROI by addressing critical farmer production, profitability and sustainability questions. NCB is transforming the corn industry and ROI for farmers.

I will add this, we aren't done. More programs on the horizon will make big impacts for corn farmers. Stay tuned or better yet, get involved with your Nebraska Corn Board.

Dan Nerud a is farmer from Dorchester, Nebraska, and is District 1 Director for the Nebraska Corn Board.
