Govs Seek Pork Industry Aid

OMAHA (DTN) -- Governors of nine pork-producing states sent a letter to President Barack Obama on Friday requesting assistance for American pork producers.

"We must do whatever we can to keep this industry viable," Iowa Governor Chet Culver said in a conference call Friday explaining the letter. Representatives from the Iowa and the National Pork Producers Councils, Tyson Fresh Foods, Hormel Foods and Paragon Economics support the letter's three proposals for aid.

The letter asks the federal government to help by purchasing surplus pork and working with China to lift export bans that are remnants of April's H1N1 flu outbreak. ...
