Nitrogen fixation provides about 50 to 60% of the soybean plant's nitrogen needs and high or low pH, salt, high soil nitrate or stress can reduce N fixation.

I think we all agree that stress is not good for the plant or any of its metabolic systems but we probably never appreciated that glyphosate applied to Roundup Ready soybeans was also a stress, even though first generations of Roundup Ready soybeans did yield less than later generation.
