EIA: Ethanol Production at 5-Week High

NEW YORK (DTN) -- The Energy Information Administration released data Wednesday showing U.S. ethanol inventories were little changed last week while production spiked to a five-week high.

Total U.S. ethanol inventories decreased 5,000 bbl to a four-week low of 17.94 million bbl during the week-ended July 18, with a year-on-year surplus now at 700,000 bbl, EIA said.

Increases in ethanol stocks for the East Coast and the Midwest were offset by declines in Gulf Coast stocks, the data showed.

Domestic ethanol production increased sharply for the second straight week, rising 16,000 bpd or 2.0% to 959,000 bpd last week as the nation's ethanol plants ramped up runs. Output soared 12.4% from a year prior while four-week average output was up 8.9%.

Blender inputs, a proxy for ethanol demand, increased 21,000 bpd or 2.5% to 872,000 bpd for the week profiled, up from a six-week low posted a week prior. Implied demand was up 2.6% from a year earlier while four-week average input was up 0.8% from a year earlier.
