The chart shows the range of July soybean prices from January 1 to June 25 of each year from 1990 to the present. Both the lows (red diamonds) and the highs (blue diamonds) represent July soybean prices divided by USDA's cost of production so that we can compare prices over time. As of April 3, 2014, July soybeans closed at $14.54 1/4 or 48% above USDA's estimated cost of production, one of the higher values ever offered.* (DTN chart)
Old-crop soybean supplies are scarce and market clues remain bullish, but it should also be pointed out that current prices for old-crop soybeans are offering a level of profitability rarely seen.
