Modified Live Vaccines Versus Killed Vaccines

Consider all the evidence before making a decision about what type of vaccine will work best for your operation. (DTN/Progressive Farmer photo by Becky Mills)

Question:

I am reading and hearing a lot about problems with modified live vaccines. I know you have recommended them over killed vaccines in the past, but has something changed?

Answer:

There are some studies being used to detail problems with modified live vaccines (MLVs). Personally, I think the data supporting the use of MLVs is much stronger.

I still believe MLVs provide the best immune response, are much less expensive and, when used according to the label, are safe. This is what I use on my own cattle and what I recommend to my clients whenever they can be used.
