Storage Losses

Elaine Kub
By  Elaine Kub , Contributing Analyst
Based on total on-farm and off-farm storage capacity and production estimates for various crops, some regions are obliged to store corn in piles. Even in states with theoretical extra capacity, corn piles have popped up toward the end of the abundant 2014 harvest. (DTN graphic by Elaine Kub)
Record-large grain production and lingering rail backlogs in 2014 may cause heavy reliance on open grain piles for corn storage. Open piles are susceptible to loss, so the overall production estimate may deserve to be trimmed.
