OMAHA (DTN) -- Snow and ice affecting livestock and transportation in the Southern Plains and a continued chance for at least some precipitation in central Brazil are the primary weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

HEAVY EASTERN MIDWEST RAIN

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for heavy to very heavy rain and flooding in the southeastern Midwest and Delta through the weekend. The heavy rain will maintain adequate to surplus soil moisture and is considered neutral to somewhat favorable for winter wheat, except in areas of severe flooding. Drier, warmer weather during the six to 10-day period will be more favorable. Mixed precipitation in the western Midwest during the next few days may cause minor transportation delays.

SOUTHERN PLAINS RAIN AND SNOW

In the Southern Plains, an ice storm may increase stress to livestock in the west Texas-west Oklahoma area and to possibly southwest and south-central Kansas during the next one to two days. Transportation should be greatly affected as well. Improving conditions are indicated later this weekend and for much of next week. Heavy rain and possible severe flooding may be somewhat unfavorable in some wheat fields of the southeast to south-central area during the short-range period. A more favorable weather pattern for wheat and livestock is forecast during the six- to 10-day period.

BENEFICIAL BRAZIL PATTERN

Across Brazil, episodes of rain and showers will favor development of earlier-planted corn and soybeans through south and east-central crop areas.

Some delay to planting is possible. Farther north, scattered showers and thundershowers help improve conditions for soybeans in Mato Grosso as well.

PERIODIC ARGENTINA SHOWERS

Central Argentina will have scattered thunderstorms with favorable moisture for developing wheat and earlier-planted corn. Rainfall at the end of this week will maintain soil moisture for crops but may also cause some planting delay.

VARIABLE RUSSIA PRECIPITATION

Light precipitation is in store for Russia and Ukraine during the next five days. Temperatures will range from warm to very cool; however, no stressful cold is indicated. Some areas are receiving snow for protective wheat cover. The overall condition of the wheat is variable, with some areas having below-average germination due to very dry soils at planting time. The winter wheat crop remains vulnerable to winterkill even if temperatures are normally-cold during the upcoming winter season.

VARIABLE SOUTH AFRICA TEMPERATURES

South Africa's crop areas have had some periods of rain during the past week. However, more rain is needed to support favorable development of maize and sugarcane, especially during periods of hot temperatures. Hot temperatures redeveloped Wednesday and Thursday. Some milder conditions are in store during Friday with a new cold front moving through the major crop areas.
