Shower Chances in Midwest

OMAHA (DTN) -- Increasing shower potential over the Midwest, and a hot and dry weekend in the Southern Plains are the primary weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.

WEEKEND MIDWEST SHOWERS

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for showers and somewhat lower temperatures during the holiday weekend to ease stress to late-filling Midwest crops. However, rain may be somewhat unfavorable for maturing crops in some areas and could also lead to early harvest delays. There is no major risk of damaging cold weather during the next week to 10 days.

HOT AND DRY PATTERN FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

Mainly dry and hot conditions will continue to stress late-filling southern Plains crops while soil moisture for the next winter wheat crop continues to diminish into Monday. The dry pattern does offer favorable conditions for maturing crops and early harvest. Longer-range charts suggest that the chance for rain may increase somewhat during the middle of next week. If verified, this would be highly beneficial to the next planting of winter wheat.

DRY PATTERN REMAINS IN DELTA

In the Delta, dry conditions with very warm to hot weather will continue to favor maturing crops and harvest progress.

SHOWERS FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, there are no significant concerns for the spring wheat or oats harvest at this time. However, wet conditions during the weekend will be unfavorable for maturing corn and soybeans.

HARVEST-DELAYING PRAIRIES RAIN

In the Canadian Prairies, rains are expected through much of the region during the next few days. Heavy rains may hit central and east areas. Rain is unfavorable for maturing crops and will likely delay the harvest.

SOUTHEAST EUROPE HEAT

Hot and dry conditions remain in place over southeastern Europe. This late summer heat wave is sapping soil moisture for the winter grains and oilseeds crops and stressing any late-filling summer crops. This region will finally turn much cooler within the next few days. The chance for needed rainfall in the area is somewhat uncertain, even with the change in temperatures.

LATE-SEASON CHINA RAIN

A recent increase in rain and showers through northeast and central China will favor late-filling corn and soybean crops, especially after midsummer dry and hot weather. Rainfall over significant portions of the North China Plain during this week helps replenish soil moisture for winter wheat.

LATE-WEEK UKRAINE HEAT

Thursday temperatures reached 91 to 98 Fahrenheit (33 to 37 Celsius) in east and south Ukraine and south Russia. Recent hot and dry conditions have favored winter grain planting and early corn and sunflower harvest, but have also increased stress to late-filling summer crops and reduced available soil moisture for early needs of the winter grains. West and some of central Ukraine and Belarus will turn much cooler during the coming days with some promise of needed rain. East Ukraine and south Russia should turn cooler as well, but probably not until early next week, with lighter rain potential.

MINIMAL WESTERN INDIA SHOWERS

In western India, it appears likely, at this time, that west-central, northwest and north-central India and Pakistan will remain drier and hotter during the next seven to 10 days. However, light rain may develop in Gujarat Maharashtra. This likely means an early withdrawal of the Monsoon from these locations. Seasonal rains to Sept. 2 are shown averaging significantly below normal in eastern Gujarat, northwest and central areas of south India and from Punjab and Haryana eastward through Uttar Pradesh to northern Bihar. Seasonal rains average near to above normal elsewhere in the region which includes near normal in the west Gujarat area.
