Tyson Join Venture Biofuels Plant Completes Construction

OMAHA (DTN) -- Construction has been completed on a Tyson Foods Inc. and Syntroleum Corp. joint venture biofuels plant in Geismar, La., according to a news release from Syntroleum. The plant will produce a variety of biofuels using animal fats and greases.

The plant is preparing for the start of production, and has received its first shipments of animal fats, according to the news release.

Jeff Bigger, director of the Dynamic Fuels management committee, the company formed in the partnership, said the start of production is planned for the third quarter of 2010.

The plant will convert fats, greases and oils supplied by Tyson Foods into as much as 75 million gallons of renewable fuels per year. Those fuels include synthetic diesel and jet fuels and renewable diesel and jet fuel.


Novozymes, Piedmont Biofuels to Unveil First Enzymatic Biodiesel Pilot Plant in US

OMAHA (DTN) -- Enzyme producer Novozymes and North Carolina-based Piedmont Biofuels plan to unveil a new pilot plant in Pittsboro, N.C., Friday, to demonstrate a new enzyme-based technological process for biodiesel production from waste grease, according to a news release from Novozymes.

The enzymatic biodiesel pilot plant was developed in partnership with the Biofuels Center of North Carolina, and the Chatham County Economic Development Corp. The pilot plant is expected to initially produce 12,600 gallons of biodiesel annually.

Piedmont Biofuels representative Greg Austic said the new process will help increase biodiesel yields, decrease waste and allow biodiesel producers to use lower-cost feedstocks.
