USDA researchers acknowledge they are surprised by the large number of commercial positive cases of H5N2 even though there have been very few infections found in wild birds in the Mississippi Flyway. High-pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza has infected 34 commercial poultry operations, mostly in the upper Midwest, with 22 of the affected turkey operations in Minnesota.
