Despite the fact that good corn planting progress was made last week in the southern US and even into the southern Midwest including central Illinois, it is obvious with the latest national corn planting number at only 19 percent that the vast majority of the crop is grown in the northern Midwest along and north of Interstate 80. This region continues to suffer with episodes of cool wet weather and cool soil temperatures severely limiting any plantiing in the northern Midwest and most fieldwork in the northern Plains. It looks like the general weather patterns that have allowed this situation to occur, patterns which are very similiar to the winter weather pattern will continue through next week. It looks like the earliest any major push on planting corn in these major northern growing areas my not occur until the middle of May. We all know that the crop will get planted but it may become more concerning to producers if they have to wait until mid to late May for the vast majority of the crop to get in. This good news is that once the crop does get in, if these weather patterns continue into the main summer growing season it would be favorable to crop production.
