Brazil Soybean Crop 92% GMO

Brazil's soybean crop was 92% genetically modified in the 2013-14 season, according to Celeres, a local farm consultancy.

That figure represents a small increase from the 89% measured last season.

According to Celeres' numbers, GM soybeans with resistance to glyphosate and insects corresponded to 8% of planted area. The majority of those beans were of Monsanto's Intacta RR2 Pro variety, which was launched commercially this season.

Beans with stacked herbicide and insect resistance are expected to spread over the next couple of harvests.

GM corn will cover 82% of total Brazilian area this season, with that number rising to 90% for the second crop.

Adding in cotton, the total area on which stacked GM technology was employed this year totaled 20 million acres, or 20% of the total GM area.

It is expected that overall GM use will stabilize as demand from the niche conventional soybean market consolidates.
