Got Wet Grain

Corn is late and wet however we have been blessed with drying weather last week and again this week an lets hope it holds out long enough that the high moisture corn (> 25%) drops to below 25 points and gives growers more options.

Shawn Shouse, ISU agricultural engineer and grain handling expert offers these options.

If grain is under 20%, growers can still air dried this fall using dry aeration if they have time to hold it or add heat to bring it down to 16 points. These growers have lots of options.

When grain is at 20 to 25 percent options exist but they are fewer. In a normal fall the grain could be dried with aeration. But that is not likely this fall because it's so late. So if you have heat, use it to dry the grain down or market the grain. However if you have good fans, you can hold the grain wet as long as you keep it cool and plan on take on the center bottom cores. Come spring you can dry it, dry aerate it or market it.

At 25 to 30 moisture options are few. Grain won't store even when cooled and you need heated air drying or market it wet so it can be fed immediately.

Probably one option to not consider is purposely leaving corn standing in the field to let it dry down naturally. While you can juggle fields to take out driest corn first, probably not a good idea to sit idly by hoping the corn dries naturally. Remember this is November, not October.

Thank Goodness we have fairly dry corn Dan, 18-19%. Just enough heat here this year to get by. I feel for the guys stuck with 30% corn. I had that one year and waited until January to shell it and got one of the best prices I ever received.

Just started the popcorn yesterday, moisture was 14.9%. Stalks are so green at the bottom, the juice is running out of them after shelling. Headline really contributes to late season intactness on this crop.
