Wonder What's New

I am attending Poet's third stover harvesting field day in Emmetsburg, Iowa today. Their first event was in South Dakota and featured cobs. Last yeat's event in Emmetsburg was rained out but featured cobs and corn cob mix. This year's event again is in Emmetsburg an and it is a sunny day soso there will be a lot of filmable demonstrations.

Vermeer CCX770 cob harvester.

I try to keep tabs onwhat the stover harvesting technology is and how it might work at the farm level and how complicated logistics might be.

I am sure there will be some of equipment that I have seen before like Vermeer's CX770 which was based on Vern Flamme's cob caddy design. There will also be other cob harvesting prototypes, corn cob mix (CCM) setups, baling setups and who knows what else.

I will know a lot more by the end of the day and will write an update.

The technology to harvest corn stover is coming hard and fast but the prices to collect that stover while combining might also shock you (but then again it might not because it is much less than the cost of a new combine).

Man you get around, we may have to have you over here to teach us cob harvesting and management.

Ed - I have a presentation on corn cob and stover harvesting that looks at the technologies and all the pros and cons. I have delivered it several times now and would be happy to give it again if you could put together a group of interested farmers. I pull no punches.
