Handling Wet Corn

This is a tough harvest season. But in a way it is also interesting and gives us the opportunity to ask interesting questions about crop conditions, harvesting snafus, handling logistics, etc.

Late crop and fall rains and snow left wet grain.

Corn is wet, no doubt about it. Some folks have been lucky to take corn our under 20% but a lot of corn will be over 20% and some will even be over 30%.

So we asked the poll question "If your corn harvest has been delayed and grain is still high moisture, what will you do with your wet corn?"

43% said they would dry using their on-farm drying system. This makes sense if you have it.

17% said they will let it dry in the field till it reaches a level where they can aerate it. I wonder if that will happen though.

11% said they will deliver to an elevator and let them dry it. That is an option but they might now take super wet corn over 24 or 25 percent.

11% said they will dry some corn and deliver some wet corn. This makes sense since they were already probably going to deliver corn this fall anyhow.

10% said they didn't know yet because they haven't harvested. Hopefully they will figure out how wet their corn is and make a plan.

3% said they will feed or sell wet for feeding directly to livestock feeders.

However none of the respondents said they would deliver wet to an ethanol. But I know that has been going on since plants need corn and were willing to take wet corn and dock for shrinkage.

And no one said they would bag it and dry later. This is still new technology and not yet fully embraced as a grain handling tool.

Our corn is dry enough I think we can air dry it like we normally do without burning the propane that is being rationed in some areas. Pay the utility company or the gas company. I know many have tp dry it or pay the elevator if they will do it. One farmer just called and was all excited he harvested over 8000 bu on 30 acres of notilled 20% slopes. Another had about that much on 22 acres so a lot of wet but good corn out there if we can manage it!
