Well, I'm still exploring Route 66 and had this great drive today from Flagstaff, Ariz., to Needles, Calif. The weather went from mild to hot as heck. After getting frustrated over dilapidated old buildings and lack of usable roadway on the way to Flagstaff on Monday, the drive on Tuesday was pretty amazing. There were sections that were wide open then other sections of the road were comparable to Maui's famous "Road to Hana." Right before really hitting the Mojave Desert leading to Needles was the old mining town of Oatman, Ariz., which is apparently known for its wild mules. They were all over the place. Some towns don't want you to feed the geese. In this place, it's the mules. This old mule wouldn't move so I could park. Others expected some food if we were going to waste their time petting them.

Roberts Wins Primary Battle

Going from mules to pachyderms, Sen. Pat Roberts showed in Tuesday's primary that he could still take a punch and keep standing. The 78-year-old ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Committee fended off a primary challenge from Milton Wolf, a doctor who criticized Roberts for spending too long outside of Kansas. Driving across Kansas on Friday, I heard ads over and over questioning Roberts' residency, votes that claimed to show Roberts was too willing to work with the president and lack of willingness to debate Wolf. Nonetheless, Roberts prevailed 48%-41%. A pair of lesser candidates may have sucked away some votes from Wolf.

Right to Farm in Missouri

In Missouri, the amendment seeking to add the "right to farm" in the state constitution appears to have won in a close election battle. The Missouri Secretary of State office shows the ballot measure won by 50.1% to 48.8% out of 994,974 votes cast -- a margin of 2,528 votes. That reflects that the right-to-farm measure proved far more controversial than previously expected. It certainly stirred up a lot of passion in the final weeks of the campaign.
