Social Media and Today's Ag Debates

These social media tools have a way of sucking me into following a particular topic and the way ipeople track an event or topic. It was that way last week with the debate on the climate bill. Tuesday, it was Humane Society CEO Wayne Pacelle's 50-minute interview with Mike Adams on AgriTalk. I didn't have to listen to the interview because people on Twitter kept me informed, naturally with their own biases on how the interview was going. Tracking the word "Pacelle" later, I came up with 107 tweets on the topic just using that search alone.

To set up these posts, it should be added that the Humane Society wants to move into Ohio for its next ballot initiative. In an effort to curtail HSUS, agricultural groups are working to get a measure on the ballot next fall that would establish a livestock care standards board. Resolutions by Ohio lawmakers are working through the Legislature that could make that ballot measure happen.

Here is a sample of the tweets:

TomQuaife: Wayne Pacelle, prez. of HSUS, denies on www.agritalk.com that it is his intent is to shut down the livestock industry.

skinnyhorse: Wayne Pacelle "look at what we actully do".. "we are not trying to eliminate the agricultural industry.." http://snipurl.com/… Okay..

megantpierce: RT @TomQuaife: Wayne Pacelle, prez. of HSUS, denies on www.agritalk.com that it is his intent to shut down the livestock industry

Chrischinn: Mike Adams is asking Pacelle if he's a vegetarian.

Chrischinn: Pacelle is dodging the question, saying he only talks about vegetarian diet in regards to ag, says he never brings up his diet.

WriteNowBiz: Wayne Pacelle "If each American cut back on animal consmption by just 10% appr 1 billion fewer animals would be raised for food."

whitwallace: Pacelle says it's his way or no way: "We will not relent." #HSUS #ag #farm

Chrischinn: Pacelle says leaders of ag community are not willing to negotiate, seems Pacelle isn't willing to negotiate in Ohio.

celestelaurent: Pacelle admits that HSUS words ballot proposals in a way that consumers will naturally side with without educating them on issues.

rosamyst: He's quite the dancer...should we call Dancing with the Stars? @Shawndlite: Pacelle avoided the question again!!

WriteNowBiz: Wayne Pacelle you can have a scientist that is biased for a certain group. hmm...and that was denied for yrs

rosamyst: RT @IowaFarmWriter @celestelaurent Pacelle admits HSUS words ballot proposals so consumers will naturally side wo educating them on issu ..

megantpierce: Pacelle is definitely frustrated by the OH Livestock Board.

MrMoneypenny: Pacelle sidesteps interview question about the percentage of money #HSUS gives to local shelters. It's an easy question, Wayne

Chrischinn: My Q for Pacelle: Why is HSUS' experience w/livestock better than someone who works daily w/livestock? How many farms does HSUS run?

whitwallace: Pacelle says, "We're not a research oriented organization."

PorkMag: Listen to AgriTalk's 50-minute interview with Humane Society of the United States President Wayne Pacelle, at http://tinyurl.com/…

MrMoneypenny: Amused by Wayne Pacelle's admonishment of the #ag industry for "caricaturing" #HSUS. Not used to having their public image attacked.

girlaggie: Pacelle admits h'es vegetarian. Hmmm, dont your passions drive you to pursue goals? Pacelle says not so, actions don't agree on website.

agchick: Remember: #HSUS Pacelle says "states are the laboratory of democracy" He's looking for critical mass to take the case to DC re: livestock

tootsiepie23: The Agritalk interview with HSUS Pres. Wayne Pacelle was infuriating. He should really research things before they come out of his mouth.

DairyAlert: HSUS pres Pacelle denies in a radio interview that his group’s purpose is to shut down the livestock industry. http://tinyurl.com/…

If you believe that a vegan and his vegan animal rights conglomerate does not want to shut down all animal usage, then I have some gestation crates to sell you. HSUS thinks they are very crafty in that they will tighten the laws this year and be back in the next year or two to tighten the noose. HSUS is an animal rights organziation, not animal welfare and there is a difference. They do not believe that there should be any contact of humans and animals or as they say, non humans. They believe that animals have rights to be free of human intervention, breeding etc. If Ohio falls for this then that will be two states that you will see farming end. We need every farmer and all your friends who are not farmers to oppose this bill. It is estimated that only 1 percent of the population is involved in farming, so everyone should contact their government officials and all their friends and tell them to contact their friends to vote no to anything that HSUS proposes, and please do not compromise. There is absolutely no compromise with HSUS that will last beyond one or two years. CS
