Rain is Bad News for Grain and Cotton Crops

The grain sorghum and cotton crops of south Texas are in doubt because of recent heavy rainfall, KIII-TV Channel 3 reported on Wednesday. A year after a historical drought, farmers in the Coastal Bend area are now seeing the quality of their grain sorghum slowly be destroyed by flooded farm fields. "There is no doubt some has been declared a complete loss," said Jeff Stapper, the Nueces County Texas AgriLife Extension agent. "I couldn't tell at this point how much has, but I do know some fields that has been totally zeroed out." On farms across south Texas, combines are sitting in fields with only some grain harvested. Stapper estimated only about two-thirds of the grain has been harvested. The cotton crop is beginning to mature right now and should be ready for harvest in about a month. Much like the grain sorghum crop before, cotton producers believe they could have a bumper crop -- if Mother Nature cooperates and actually lets them harvest the crop, he said.

The U.S. Department of Justice is suing a western Michigan dairy it claims sold cows that contained illegal traces of antibiotics in their bodies, according to the Associated Press. Indianapolis-based Xylogenics has licensed a yeast strain developed at the Indiana University School of Medicine, to an ethanol-yeast provider company, according to the Indianapolis Business Journal. Xylogenics said the yeast can increase ethanol yields and lower costs of producing corn ethanol.
