Loudon County, Tenn., Farmer Investing in Sunflower Crop to Make a Profit

Recent dry weather and a weak economy have been hard on East Tennessee farmers but one farmer is trying an alternative crop to survive in agriculture, WATE-TV Channel 6 Knoxville reported on Thursday. Don Bailey of Loudon County planted 50 acres of sunflowers in an attempt to generate more income.

Attorney Sentenced to 26 Months in Biodiesel Scam

Disbarred Tennessee attorney H. Max Speight was sentenced to 26 months in jail for defrauding a federal biofuels subsidy program, according to the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American. Speight and William T. "Tommy" Tacker II of Okolona, Miss., were partners in Biodiesel of Mississippi Inc., which built a plant that went bankrupt in 2006.

Disease Found in Wild Pigs in N.M. Can Infect Cattle

A feral hog from Eddy County in southern New Mexico has tested positive for pseudorabies, according to the Associated Press. Pseudorabies is a viral disease that can infect cattle and wildlife. About 22 feral hogs from the area were tested over a three-month period, and one test was positive for the disease.

Farmers in the Austin, Minn., area are looking forward to a harvest completely different from last year, the Austin Daily Herald reported Thursday. At this point last year, corn and soybean crops are at least 10 days behind average after the cool weather slowed crop development.

Novera Protein Inc. has developed a patented process to convert wet distillers grains and/or syrup into new type of animal feed, Ethanol Producer reported. The process uses wet brewers grains, WDGs, syrup or a combination of two of the three ingredients, then adds protein to alter the amino acid structure of the final protein.

Cannon Keeps Birds From Dairy, But Neighbors Unhappy

Residents living near the University of Illinois' dairy farm are unhappy with the school's efforts to keep birds out of the dairy barn, the Associated Press reported. The farms manager and his employees have been using a propane cannon to scare birds away and keep them out of cattle feed.

Fiberight Brings Iowa Ethanol Plant Back to Life

A 12-year-old Iowa ethanol plant has found new life in a new company, Vinton Today in Vinton, Iowa, said, as Fiberight LLC plans to produce ethanol using paper mill waste. The plant was previously owned by Xethanol, which started production at the plant in 2005.

Pecan, Tobacco Farmers Eye Unexpectedly Good Crops

Despite hot weather damaging row crops such as peanuts and cotton, the weather has aided tobacco and pecan crops, which are on pace for a good year, the Savannah Morning News reported on Wednesday. Lenny Wells, a pecan specialist with University of Georgia Cooperative Extension said pecan trees are alternate-bearing, meaning they produce a full crop every other year and this year was suppose to be an off year for pecan production.

U.S. Sues West Michigan Farm for Antibiotics in Cows

The U.S. Department of Justice is suing a western Michigan dairy it claims sold cows that contained illegal traces of antibiotics in their bodies, according to the Associated Press. Justice Department officials filed a complaint Tuesday in a federal court in Grand Rapids that Scenic View Dairy sold cows from three farms for human consumption in spite of numerous warnings.

Indianapolis-Based Xylogenics Licenses Yeast Strain to Ethanol Producer

Indianapolis-based Xylogenics has licensed a yeast strain developed at the Indiana University School of Medicine, to an ethanol-yeast provider company, according to the Indianapolis Business Journal. Xylogenics said the yeast can increase ethanol yields and lower costs of producing corn ethanol.

USDA Announces Recall of Ground Beef Suspected of E. Coli Contamination

Cargill Meal Solutions of Wyalusing, Pa., is recalling about 8,500 pounds of ground beef that could be contaminated with a type of E. coli bacteria, according to the Washington Post. The Pennsylvania Food Safety and Inspection Service linked three illnesses in New York and Maine with the recalled ground beef.
