EU Shows Growth in Ethanol Production, Use

European ethanol production is continuing to increase, Ethanol Producer reported. While ethanol production growth was nearly 60 percent in 2008, 2009 saw the European Union's production continuing to grow by 31 percent. The total 2009 EU production was an estimated 3.7 billion liters, up from 2.8 billion liters in 2008. France remains the large EU ethanol producer with 1.250 billion liters, followed by Germany with 750 million liters, and Spain with 465 liters. Austria and Sweden more than doubled their ethanol production in 2009, ranking them fourth and fifth respectively. In addition to the growth in production, total EU consumption also grew 23 percent in 2009, reaching 4.3 billion liters (1.6 billion gallons).

U.S. Sues West Michigan Farm for Antibiotics in Cows

The U.S. Department of Justice is suing a western Michigan dairy it claims sold cows that contained illegal traces of antibiotics in their bodies, according to the Associated Press. Justice Department officials filed a complaint Tuesday in a federal court in Grand Rapids that Scenic View Dairy sold cows from three farms for human consumption in spite of numerous warnings.

Indianapolis-Based Xylogenics Licenses Yeast Strain to Ethanol Producer

Indianapolis-based Xylogenics has licensed a yeast strain developed at the Indiana University School of Medicine, to an ethanol-yeast provider company, according to the Indianapolis Business Journal. Xylogenics said the yeast can increase ethanol yields and lower costs of producing corn ethanol.

Aussie Algae Biofuels Company to List
