Board Denies Request to Run Heavier Trucks

An Illinois county board told the Marquis Energy ethanol plant it will not be allowed to run heavier truck loads that what is currently allowed on the county road, the LaSalle News Tribune reported. The most economic route to ship DDG to a customer in China is to take it by truck to Joliet, then railed to the West Coast, then shipped to China. The problem is that while container loads weigh around 91,000 pounds, the weight limit on the county road near the ethanol plant is only 80,000 pounds. Plant officials say that simply reducing the load is not a solution, since a buyer would not pay for 23 metric tons of product when other companies ship 26 metric tons for the same price. Plant officials suggested a $10-per-truck fee, but the county engineer said the roadway in question was not designed for such heavy loads and fears costly repairs and safety problems.
