Farmers Need Rainfall to Save Cash Crops
Farmers in the Hampton Roads, Va., area are in need of rainfall to save crops as well as pasture, the Daily Press reported on Friday. Isle of Wight farmer Dee Dee Darden said the combination of lack of rainfall and extremely hot temperatures over the last two months has caused the loss of the corn crop and pastureland.[Read Full Blog Post]

Report: 'Ethanol Pumps $2.5 Billion into Minnesota Economy'
The ethanol industry generated more than $2.5 billion in economic activity in 2009, according to a new report from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, Bloomberg Businessweek said. The report said the industry supported more than 6,800 jobs, as well.[Read Full Blog Post]

Oil Spill Boosts Alabama Ethanol Sales
Alabama motorists who drive flexible-fuel vehicles have increasingly turned to ethanol since the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, according to the Florence Times Daily in Florence, Ala. That increase has prompted a local fuel distributor to install a pump for dispensing ethanol at one of his Lauderdale County convenience stores.[Read Full Blog Post]

Lightning Kills Dairy Cows in Wisconsin
A dairy farmer is struggling after a lightning strike killed eight of his 40 cows last week at his dairy in southern Wisconsin, according to the Associated Press. Brad Timm reported a loud boom that rattled his family's home was apparently a lightning strike that hit a tree at the edge of a field on the family farm.[Read Full Blog Post]

University of Minnesota-Crookston Sells Off Dairy Herd

Goss's Wilt is Showing Up in Illinois
Goss's wilt was detected in Illinois in a corn leaf sample last week at the University of Illinois Plant Clinic, the Prairie Farmer reported on Monday.
