New York and Chicago spot ethanol prices advanced in early trade Monday amid continuing worries about supply shortages. Severe cold in the Midwest prompted closures of some ethanol plants and delayed deliveries, said trade sources. "Rail is loading slowly, so if mills can't load fast they should slow down, but everything is only for two days," said a trader.

January ethanol barge at the New York Harbor was discussed at a $2.35 to $2.40 per gallon bid/ask spread, up 0.5 cts on the day. Ethanol for today transfer at the Argo supply hub near Chicago traded at $2.21 per gallon, up 2.5 cents for the day, and is now being talked at a $2.20 to $2.25 per gallon bid/ask spread.
