China Once Again Top U.S. DDG Importer

China has regained its position as the largest importer of U.S.-produced distillers grains, according to an article by Ethanol Producer (http://bit.ly/…).

China had been the top DDG importer prior to its anti-dumping investigation against the U.S. in 2010. At the end of 2010, when the antidumping investigation began, Chinese buyers had spent about $500 million buying 2.52 million metric tons of distillers grains. Chinese importers quickly ceased purchasing in fear of possible high import tariffs and the 18-month-long investigation brought DDG imports to a standstill.

In 2011, DDG imports fell as low as 63,767 metric tons in April and did not break the 200,000 mark until spring of 2012. However, between January and July of 2013, China imported a total of 1.72 million metric tons of distillers grains and purchased a record 468,000 metric tons in July alone.

China's imports in those first six months of 2013 once again pushed the country to the No. 1 DDG-importing spot, totaling a 16% increase over the same months in 2012.

China's steady demand for distillers grains is attributed largely to factors such as its progressive livestock operations, its growing middle class and more efficient logistic methods. Expectations are that China's DDG imports will at least remain stable, if not increase in the future.
