Exports of ethanol and related co-products assisted Wisconsin to have a record-breaking year of agriculture-related exports in 2012, according to an article by Wisconsin Farmer (http://bit.ly/…).

A report released Feb. 22 from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection said that Wisconsin's 2012 agricultural export totaled more than $2.9 billion, a 3% increase over 2011 levels. This marks the highest level ever for the state's ag-related exports and pushes the state into 13th place among all 50 states.

Wisconsin's secretary at the DATCP added that overall U.S. ag-related exports have increased 2% in the past year as well.

Wisconsin's most valuable exports in 2012 were in the category of ethanol at a total of $400 million. The state ranks second only to Texas in ethanol exports.

Wisconsin-based company Bio-Nutrition International, Inc. works with DATCP to provide cost reimbursement of international marketing activities of food and agricultural products. The company said that 2012 sales of dried distillers grains and other raw materials were excellent and continue to increase, especially to China, which continues a high demand for animal feed products. A company representative said the Chinese favor and trust high quality feed ingredients produced in the U.S. Midwest.
