National Ethanol Research Center Could get Upgrade

The National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is asking for a facility upgrade that could cost anywhere from $2 million to $4.5 million, according to SIUE, with plans to install a corn fractionation system.

The center is looking for industry providers to donate to the project and has found two companies that will donate portions of the upgrade.

Fractionation technology allows an ethanol plant to separate the parts of the corn kernel, including the oil, fiber and starch.

DTN: The wave of the future in corn-based ethanol is to use every part of the corn plant to make money. Fractionation is one step in that direction. In addition, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the recently released Renewable Fuel Standard makes the assumption that new corn ethanol plants will be more carbon friendly by using distillers grains as an ethanol feedstock. So while much of the world looks to cellulosic ethanol as the wave of the ethanol future, the industry continues to hone corn-based technology. (Todd Neeley)
