University of Nebraska Steps up Algae Research

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is expanding its research into algae as a biofuels feedstock, according to Media Newswire.

Part of the greenhouse complex at UNL's Beadle Center will be revamped into an algal biofuels research center.

Scientists will begin growing algae in small containers, then in five-foot long bags and then on to oblong pool.

Researchers are trying to figure out which algae cultivars are best suited for biofuel production. There are some 200,000 algae species.

In addition, UNL scientists are exploring how triglycerides can be most cost-effectively extracted from algae to make biofuel.

UNL received $1.9 million in federal funding for the research and could receive additional tens of millions of dollars.
