Sunnyside Ethanol Changes Plan on Pa. Plant

Sunnyside Ethanol LLC is still working on a plan to build an ethanol plant in Curwensville, Pa., the Clearfield Progress in Clearfield, Pa. said, but may use natural gas instead of waste coal to run the plant.

The company continues to try and nail down the cost of the project, which is said to be between $145 million and $245 million.

The company said it makes more sense to build a natural gas-powered plant because natural gas is affordable.

DTN: Natural gas prices have been the least of ethanol's concerns in 2009. In fact natural gas prices have remained relatively low. However, as we've seen in the past several years the energy market is extremely volatile. Natural gas and other energy prices can change on a dime, meaning it is important for ethanol plants to lock in prices that allow them to realize profit margins. This helps take the sting away from volatile price shifts. (Todd Neeley)
