Company Gets Millions for Cellulosic Ethanol Pilot Plant

A Visalia, Calif. refinery will receive $20.4 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a pilot plant that would produce ethanol using agricultural waste, according to the Visalia Times-Delta.

EdeniQ, a spinoff of Altra Biofuels in Goshen, Calif., and Logos Technologies of Arlington, Va., will share the grant.

The Goshen corn-ethanol plant will be modified to use stems, pits, cobs and shells, to make ethanol. Eventually the technology could use orchard clippings, nutshells and other ag waste.

DTN: This proposed California plant is yet another example of what will be a very regional cellulosic ethanol industry. In California that industry likely will use orchard and other agriculture wastes to produce cellulosic ethanol. Irvine, Calif.-based BlueFire Ethanol plans to produce ethanol on landfills, using pre-sorted ag wastes. Each region of the U.S. will use feedstocks that are much different from other regions.
