Shell: Algae Biofuels Still 10 Years Away

Researchers from government and big oil companies may have been over optimistic in predicting a commercialization date for algae-based biofuels, Business Green reported. Despite strong research and development efforts, second-generation biofuels are unlikely to be available commercially for at least another decade, according to Peter Voser, the head of Royal Dutch Shell. Voser said that although Shell has more ongoing second-generation biofuel projects going that its rivals and was an estimated 18 months ahead in terms of algae-based biofuel, it would be a number of years before a commercially proven plant would be operational.

DTN: Even Shell itself now admits the company was over-optimistic in its prediction of commercially viable algae biofuel production. Shell is scaling back other production start-up dates it had predicted, such as cellulosic ethanol production from straw using enzymes by its Canadian partner Iogen, which now is estimated to not be in commercial production until 2020. Commercially viable biomass ethanol was 10 years away 10 years ago, and in 2020 it will be 9 years away.

So Dr. Elam, let's apply your cynicism across a much broader spectrum. There is no predictable cure for cancer developed in the last three decades, so let's give it up and move along to something else! There has been no "world peace" in the last century so let's give up on the idea! There has been no developement of a "three legged chicken (increasing the chicken leg market by 50%) so let's shut down the poultry industry. The economy is out of control and can't seem to be an easy fix so let's get rid of all the economists! Simple solutions, eh? We just stop trying! {heavy on the sarcasm!}

The death rate will always be 100%. Cure cancer and the death rate goes up everything else. Which do you want, cancer or Alzheimer's? I am not a cynic, just a realist.
