Texas Rail Park to Open in 2010

Levelland, Texas officials expect a rail park to open in less than a year, the Lubbock Avalanche Journal in Lubbock, Texas said, which is being built for the Levelland/Hockley County Ethanol plant.

City leaders and community members broke ground on the $8.9 million project Thursday, that encompasses 300 acres on the eastern edge of the city and four miles of track.

Railroad Specialties Co. of Colorado will start construction just after Thanksgiving, and completion is set for early September 2010.

DTN: There has been a lot of talk about the need to create a dedicated pipeline system for ethanol. Yet we continue to hear stories about ethanol companies improving and adding rail lines to transport their fuel to market. That's because there really isn't a national effort underway to create ethanol pipelines. There is a couple of projects in the works but hardly of the scale needed to create a national ethanol pipeline system. The biggest barrier is cost. It takes anywhere from $1 million to $3 million to lay just one mile of pipeline. To create a national pipeline could take tens of billions of dollars. (Todd Neeley)

Rather than transport ethanol all over the country, I hope as time goes forward demand for E-85 will grow allowing more ethanol to be used locally where it is produced. Local use of ethanol will help reduce the need for extensive shipping.
