Northeast Biofuels Expects Startup in 2010

Northeast Biofuels LLC's 100-million-gallon ethanol plant in Volney, N.Y. could become operational in the second quarter of 2010, according to Ethanol Producer Magazine.

The plant started production in August 2008, but shutdown operations when the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January.

Sunoco Inc. purchased the plant for $8.5 million in April through a bankruptcy auction.

DTN: Northeast Biofuels was one of many plants changing hands in the past couple of years, as the U.S. ethanol industry went through a shakeout that included bankruptcies and shutdowns. When you consider what other companies paid to acquire ethanol plants, the Sunoco purchase was probably the lowest price paid for any plant during the shakeout. But it comes with a caveat -- Sunoco is having to pay for repairs to the plant. (Todd Neeley)
