Ethanol, Swine flu Fears hit Michigan hog Farmer

Brady Township, Mich. farmer Nick Thiel had his sights set on a 6,000-head swine farm until the market prices for pork started falling, the Saginaw News in Saginaw, Mich. said. With the publicity surrounding the H1N1 flu virus -- identified early on as swine flu -- pork prices fell at a time when industry officials said the pork industry was already hurt by a rise in ethanol production.

The News said Thiel's feed corn expenditures were $2.35 a bushel, but more than tripled to $7.50 a bushel.
