Distiller's Grain set to Ride Ethanol Coattails

Demand for ethanol co-product distiller's grain is expected to continue to grow as livestock producers turn to the feed as a cheaper alternative to corn, Reuters said.

As the U.S. ethanol industry gears up for what is expected to be a better year in 2010, more DDGs are expected to make its way into the U.S. livestock sector.

Darrel Good, extension economist at the University of Illinois, said as ethanol production ramps up the market will have to find a place for more DDGS, some in the export markets and domestically.

DTN: In many instances during the past 18 months, it has been ethanol riding DDGs' coattails. If it wasn't for DDGs many other ethanol producers could have gone under. That's why there is such a need to develop new ethanol co-products -- to help get through times when ethanol margins are not so good. (Todd Neeley)
