Cargill Wins Auction for Nebraska Ethanol Plant

Cargill made the successful bid at auction for the assets of the unfinished 110-million-gallon Altra Nebraska ethanol facility in Carleton, according to MidwestAGnet.com. The amount of the sale price was not released.

Construction on the Altra plant started in 2006 and was about half complete in November 2007. Cargill is set to take possession of the assets Wednesday.

Altra filed for bankruptcy in August 2009, citing more than $86 million in liabilities and assets of between $10 million and $50 million.

Originally the Altra project had a $220 million price tag.

DTN: In the recent string of bankruptcies and buyouts in the ethanol industry, we've seen a wide range of the prices paid for ethanol plants. Some have sold for as little as $8 million, others for nearly $100 million. The sale prices depend on a number of factors including plant condition and location. Since the Carleton plant was unfinished chances are Cargill bought the facility for a reasonable price. That's because it will take a bit of an investment to complete the plant and start production. Hate to see an unfinished plant sell at a discount, but glad to see someone sees value here with oil back up to $80.00 per barrel.
