Week 1 Canadian grain statistics as of Aug. 10 show a marked improvement over year ago volumes. (DTN chart)

The Canadian Grain Commission's Grains Week 1 Grain Statistics Weekly, released Friday afternoon and covering up to the week ending Aug. 10 indicates an improvement over last year's data.

As indicated on the attached chart, producer deliveries totaled 1.036 million metric tonnes, up 129% from the 452,300 mt delivered into the system during the same period one year ago. The largest response in terms of volume is seen with wheat, where the year/year increase for the week is almost 300,000 mt, while the largest increase in deliveries seen on a percentage basis is in canola, where producers delivered 2.6 times the volume delivered in the same period last year. This is due not only to the heightened level of current rail service but also due to extremely tight supplies of canola available one year ago.

Terminal receipts for week 1 totaled 1.2227 mmt, up 71.2% from year-ago levels. Movement of prairie grain to the ports on the west coast, Thunder Bay and Churchill totaled 920,300 mt for the period, more than double the 431,500 mt shown as unloaded in week 1 last year. The huge 2013/14 carryout, government legislation forcing minimum volumes moved on a weekly basis and heightened sense of urgency to move grain prior to the upcoming harvest are leading to more favorable results.

Total exports for all grains at 808,800 mt for the week are 88% higher than achieved in week 1 in 2013. This is a three-week high and compares favorably to the 1,359.1 mt shipped in the combined weeks of week 51 and 52.
