In what likely will be our last comments on crop conditions for this growing season, the end of September corn and soybean ratings are some of the highest ever reflecting what are record yields for each.

Using our usual ratings system where we weight the crop based on the percent in each category and assign that category a factor of 2 for very poor, 4 for poor, 6 for fair, 8 for good, and 10 for excellent and then sum the results, U.S. crop conditions as of September 28th calculated to 776 for corn and 768 for soybeans.

This the fifth highest corn rating ever for this time of year exceeded only by the 818 reading in 1994, 782 in 1992, 794 in 1987, and the 816 back in 1986.

This year's end of September soybean rating is the third highest ever topped only by the 795 reading back in 1994 and the 773 rating in 1992.

All of these prior years mentioned, 1986, 1987, 1992 and 1994 were all blockbuster years with record yields established for both corn and soybeans.

This year's end of September crop ratings are also far higher than readings for 2004 and 2009, also two record yield breaking seasons for both corn and soybeans.

Another remarkable feature in regard to this year's high end of September ratings is that conditions actually improved from the lofty readings seen at the end of July and that is very unusual as crop conditions normally decline starting mid-summer.

From the end of July to the end of September corn ratings increase by 2 points vs. the average 1986-2013 decline of 14 points while soybean ratings increased by 8 points vs the average 18 point decline.
