DTN Closing Grain Comments Old-Crop Soybeans, Wheat, Lead Grains Higher 8/21 1:47PM
September soybeans posted their highest close in three weeks Thursday as commercials continued to bid up the remaining supplies of old-crop beans. Commercial buying also lifted wheat prices with support from a lower-than-expected production estimate from Canada, concerns about wheat quality in Europe, and a five-day forecast for heavy rain in South Dakota.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected during Friday in the west and south areas of the Northern Plains and through the northwest part of the central Plains. A few showers and thundershowers are also possible over portions of the northeast and east-central Midwest Friday.

In 1935, in an effort to help ranchers hit hard by the Dust Bowl, the U.S. government bought 547 head of Hereford cattle in Arizona and New Mexico, and shipped them to the Seminole reservation in Florida. While the purchase may have helped the ranchers, it didn't do the cattle any favors. Most couldn't survive on the poor-quality flatwoods forages.
