Narrow Thinking

Harry Stine is narrowing his focus. Last year the independent seed company entrepreneur devoted 2,500 acres of his research fields in Dallas County, Iowa, to 12-inch row corn using a special planter and corn head. In 2013, Stine Seed Company plans to expand the project.

Planting in rows that narrow probably seems intimidating because growers face a forest of cornstalks and a field that is not easily trafficked. Conventional approaches to planting and managing the crop are not the same, but surprisingly, agronomics are very similar.
