Like most people my age, I took shop class in high school (yes, decades ago). One of the first lessons Mr. Jacobs taught us was that unless we liked scratches on our projects, we had to learn to sand with the grain of the wood. While that is a valuable lesson in the world of woodworking, I've found that sometimes in analysis one has to go against the grain.
