OMAHA (DTN) -- The prospect of the Pacific Ocean entering an El Nino phase during this coming summer has garnered much attention in the past few weeks.

The question is: How would such weather conditions affect crops and markets?

El Nino exists when equator-region Pacific Ocean sea surface temperatures reach sustained levels of one degree or more Celsius (two degrees Fahrenheit) above average, and are accompanied by a barometer value called the Southern Oscillation Index of minus 8.0 or lower.
