OMAHA (DTN) -- Sometime in the far distant past -- a millennium ago, when human society in the Southern Plains featured nomadic tribes, or maybe even in pre-Columbian years -- the region had a drier period than in the September 2010 to March 2014 span.

But you would have to go back that far to find such a time period because, in the Texas Panhandle, precipitation records dating back to 1892 show that no time since -- not the Dust Bowl of the 1930s or the "Big Dry" of the 1950s -- sported a 3 1/2-year stretch of parched conditions ...
