Wed Aug 21, 2013 09:23 PM CDT

SPENCER, Iowa (DTN) -- Scouts on the eastern leg of the Pro Farmer Midwest Crop Tour pegged the Illinois average corn yield at 170.5 bushels per acre, higher than the three-year average, and bean pod counts at 1,116 in a 3' by 3' square, neck and neck with the three-year average.

The Illinois corn yield is up 40.2% over drought-ravaged 2012 and up 15.3% over the three-year crop tour average.

"The word of the day is variability," said Brian Grete, Pro Farmer managing editor and senior market analyst.
