HADDONFIELD, N.J. (DTN) -- Profit margins are under more pressure for 2016 than any year in recent memory. A $5.20 crop insurance guarantee on winter wheat for 2015-16 -- more than 17% below last year's planting price -- won't cover most growers' cost of production. Spring-planted corn and soybeans likely will face the second year in a row of below-cost guarantees when they are calculated early next year, based on current futures.

Fortunately, a crop insurance feature first launched on a limited basis in 2015 could actually help growers economize by getting more for less next season.
