Long before I was old enough to intelligently listen to a market report on the radio, interpret the trend line of a commodity chart, or suffer the tsunami-like churning of a stomach trapped in a bank meeting, I knew how to read the signs of troubled financial times.

All I had to do was mark certain behavioral changes in my Dad's usual sunny disposition.

For example, whenever he came home from the feedlot fervently preaching the horticultural revelation that "money didn't grow on trees," the whole family quickly concluded that the market had taken a turn for the worse.
