Milk futures jumped mid-week in response to increasing cheese prices, but retraced those gains by the end of the week. Various reports of the impact hot weather was having on Western milk production had traders ready and willing to purchase futures contracts. Reports are that production declined 8-15%, reducing milk receipts at the plant level. Some plant operators actually welcomed this reduction as it happened during the holiday week and it did allow for some smaller plants to accomplish much needed maintenance.
