LINCOLN, Neb. (DTN) -- Farmers around the world are capable of producing enough food for a global population expected to reach 9 billion people by 2050. It is government policies that are allowing the food to go to waste, a renowned agriculture economist told an audience at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Tuesday

Per Pinstrup-Andersen, 2001 World Food Prize Laureate and economics professor at Cornell University, said government policies, or a lack of the right government policies, are hurting the world's food system.

"Government policies are needed for all of us to be food secure," he said.
