One of my favorite movies -- and one on many people's top ten list -- is 1994's "The Shawshank Redemption." Toward the end, the main character, Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), breaks out of the prison, leaving his friend Red (wonderfully played by Morgan Freeman) to summarize the escape in geological terms. "Oh, Andy loved geology. I guess it appealed to his meticulous nature. An ice age here, million years of mountain building there. Geology is the study of pressure and time. That's all it takes really, pressure ... and time."
